Wanted: Finians Green Team volunteers!

As some of you will know Finians has been selected as one of 45 clubs across the island to participate in the pilot phase of the GAA Green Clubs Programme https://www.gaa.ie/my-gaa/community-and-health/green-clubs-sustainability/

The Gaelic Games Associations are founded on the principles of respect and community – a respect not only for each other but also for the land on which we live; a community defined not only by its individuals but also by its links to place, to heritage and to the natural and built environment.

The Green Club programme will help clubs to identify and implement simple measures at our club to protect our natural heritage and secure a sustainable future for our local communities. It will focus on the five key areas of Energy, Waste, Water, Transport and Biodiversity.

Finians have already started our journey to be a more sustainable club through recycling and plastic bottle initiatives, and cycling training for some teams. https://www.gaa.ie/news/gearing-up-to-be-green-focus-on-st-finian-s/

Each pilot club has been asked to set up a voluntary Green Team with members including youth members who will help to drive the programme, come up with new ideas and implement projects. These projects can not only protect the environment but also help the club save money through using less resources like energy and generating less waste.

One of the first projects we’d like to do in the next few weeks is to clean and re paint a club container in Ridgewood playing grounds. Other projects in the pipeline include the installation of bike racks at the club house, an art mural and tree planting.

Now is the time to bring out you inner Greta or David Attenborough!
